BETTY KATHERINE OAKMAN GIBSON
Betty Gibson, 90, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at her home in Rosedale. She was born on October 28, 1925 in Panthur Burn, Mississippi to Robert "Bob" and Katherine (Dennis) Oakman. She was a graduate of Hollandale High School and was the Valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Delta State College with a degree in Home Economics and a teaching degree. She married Dr. John Thomas Gibson on February 10, 1949 and moved to Shaw, Mississippi from Memphis, TN after Dr. Gibson graduated from dental school. They enjoyed raising their children in Shaw where she was an active member of the community and the Shaw United Methodist Church. She was a dedicated teacher and taught many years at Bayou Academy and in the Cleveland and West Bolivar school systems. In 1978, they moved to Rosedale where she continued to be an integral part of the community there and at the Rosedale United Methodist Church. She loved to travel, sew, bake, play the piano and seemed to always have an insight to those who needed her help. She loved baseball and especially liked listening to MSU games on the radio to record her own stats. She was a supportive and loving wife, devoted to her children, and took special delight in doting on her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Robert, Malcolm, Jack and W. O. (Buddy), whom she adored.
She is survived by her husband, Tom, of 67 years who was not only her companion, but her faithful caretaker of the last eight years. She is also survived by her children, Tommy (Bonita) Gibson of Huntsville, AL, Katie Clark of Byram, MS, Jody (Susan) of Rosedale, and Jan (Louie) of Jackson, MS; six grandchildren, Brian Clark, Bradley Clark, Curt Gibson, Rachael Gibson Wilson, Grayce Smith and Curran Gibson; 5 great-grandchildren, Abby and Zach Clark, Kayley and Lexie Gibson, and Liam Clark and an expected grandson.
The family would especially like to thank Anita Warhurst for her long-term tender care and her sweet devotion to our "Mimi".
A family service will be held at a later date and memorials may be made to the Rosedale United Methodist Church, St. Jude, or a charity of your choice.
