Charles Curtis Newton, 80, of Cleveland, MS, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, MS.
Charles was born on September 25, 1933 in Portland, Arkansas, to Jasper Curtis Newton and Pearl Elam Newton. Charles graduated from Portland High School in 1951. After high school he attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello where he played nose guard for the football team. He graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Management. Charles also served in the United States Army as Corporal from 1954-1956 at the time of the Korean War.
Charles married Sarah Jane Noble of Hamburg, Arkansas, on June 16, 1963. Charles and Sarah were married for 50 years and have two sons, Curt and John.
Charles was employed by Commercial Credit Corporation from 1962 until 1989 and retired from working in finance after 33 years in the field. He was a 50 year member of the Portland Masonic Lodge in Portland, Arkansas, and a member of the Cleveland Exchange Club for 34 years. Charles was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Cleveland, where he was a member of the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class. Charles enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and sports. He enjoyed attending all Delta State University athletic games and was a dye-hard Arkansas Razorback.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors are his wife, Sarah Noble Newton; two sons, Curtis Leslie Newton and wife Linda Gail of Cleveland, John Noble Newton, Sr. and wife, Kim of Bentonia, MS; and four grandchildren, Taylor Newton, Parker Newton, Noble Newton, and Ashley Newton.
Pallbearers will include Jerry Ainsworth, Ed Ballard, Pat Brower, Earl Coleman, Dr. Jerry Dallas, and Gerald Jordan.
Visitation will be held at 9:00 am followed by the funeral services at 10:00 am on Friday, May 2, 2014, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Cleveland, MS. Interment will be in the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg Arkansas at 2:00 PM.
Memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice
