CLEVELAND - Eugene"Gene" Tharp, age 84, of Cleveland, MS, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland.
Visitation will be held Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Cleveland Funeral Home in Cleveland. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, September 16, 2018 in the Cleveland Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Robert Haney will officiate the service. Interment will be at the New Cleveland Cemetery where the Masons of the Blue Lodge will conduct the Masonic Rites burial.
Mr. Tharp was born on September 13,1934 to Daniel and Lee Ola (Vaughn) Tharp in Indianola, MS. He grew up in the Shaw, MS area. He married Eloise Weeks July 15, 1956 in Boyle, MS. They moved to Tchula, MS where he managed the Billups Service Station for several years before moving to Cleveland to work at Walt's Gulf Service Station. He later purchased DX Services Station of which he later renamed to Tharp's Texaco. After his retirement from the service station business he began his career in the vinyl siding industry. He and his wife Eloise owned and operated Gene's Vinyl Siding for over 20 years. Gene was also the co-owner of Cleveland Flower & Commissary for 33 years. During his off time he enjoyed fishing but his passion was turning wood into furniture. Gene was a member of the Masonic Lodge #470 and had been a past Master of the Lodge. He was a Master Mason; a 32° Mason and a Shriner. Gene was a member of the First Baptist Church Boyle for many years. He was also a former Tchula Volunteer Fireman and a member of the Bolivar County C B Club/Skywatch Team.
Mr. Tharp was preceded in death by his parents Daniel and Lee Ola Tharp; wife, Eloise Weeks Tharp; grandson, Brian Foster; sisters, Carrie Powell, Edna Lancaster and Elaine Ross; Two brothers, J.D. and Cecil Tharp.
He is survived by Daughter, Cathy (Raymond) Daniels of Cleveland, MS; Son, Danny (Fay) Tharp of Cleveland, MS; Granddaughter, Amanda (Stacey) Oswalt of Cleveland, MS; Grandson, Ray (Kristy) Daniels of Madison, MS; Great grandchildren; Emma Oswalt, Lauren Daniels, and Jacob Daniels; Sister, Betty Gullick of Indianola, MS. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.
His pallbearers will be the Masons of the Masonic Bodies.
