Mr. James Philip Wiggins, Sr., age 77, of Cleveland, MS, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Jackson, MS.
Born on December 13, 1947, to A.C. Wiggins and Roberta Smith Wiggins in Cleveland, Philip was a proud member of the Cleveland High School Class of 1966. He furthered his education at Millsaps College and Delta State University, laying the groundwork for a fulfilling career in agriculture and later with Valley Food Service. Philip dedicated many years to the company and retired as a regional supervisor after traveling extensively across the southeastern United States. Following his retirement, he returned to his cherished hometown of Cleveland.
Philip was deeply devoted to his community, exemplifying a life of service and leadership. He achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and later gave back by serving for many years as a dedicated Scout Master. His commitment to public service also included over 15 years with the Bolivar County Volunteer Fire Department, where he held various leadership roles.
A devoted father, Philip found great joy in coaching his children in the sports they loved—softball, soccer, and football. Beyond coaching, he embraced a wide range of hobbies, including reading, hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Among his greatest passions was cooking, especially the larger the group, the better. For many years, he generously shared his culinary talents with numerous organizations across the community.
Philip’s love of nature became a cherished family tradition, passed down to his children and grandchildren. In his later years, he found joy in gathering with friends to play bridge, a pastime that brought him both relaxation and connection. A respected and active member of the First United Methodist Church in Cleveland, Philip’s faith was a guiding force throughout his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents, A.C. and Roberta Smith Wiggins. Philip is survived by his three children: Roberta Edwards (Dennis) of Gluckstadt, MS, Philip Wiggins, Jr. (Tiffany) of Royse City, TX, and Ann Corinne Lopez (Gilbert) of Cleveland, MS. He is also remembered by his sister, Corinne Casanova of Cleveland, MS, and his beloved grandchildren: Nathan, Luke, Jacob, Sophie, Gilbert, Jr., and Alex.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 10:00 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church in Cleveland, MS, officiated by Reverend Chris Young.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 23 at 29 Gaston Dr., Cleveland, MS 38732, c/o Roane Logan, in honor of Philip's dedication to scouting.
