Jimmie Carnell Hood, aged 88, of Cleveland passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. He was born on December 7, 1934 in Bolivar County, and grew up in Anguilla, Mississippi where he attended school.
Following high school graduation Jimmie enlisted in the United States Army where he was in the paratroops. Later he attended Delta State College and received a Bachelors Degree in Education. Jimmie coached football, basketball, and baseball at Lula-Rich, Lambert, and Houston high schools in Mississippi.
After coaching he opened Hood Farm Loans and farmed in the Macon Mississippi area. Later Jimmie and his family lived in Anguilla, and owned a furniture and appliance business.
When the three Hood children were grown Jimmie and his wife were over-joyed to become houseparents at Palmer Home for Children. In retirement, Jimmie and his wife owned Cotton Row Outlet in Cleveland.
Jimmie enjoyed all sports and loved to cook and grill. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest. Jimmie loved people and people loved him. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was an officer at one time and he was a lifetime member of the Delta State Alumni Association.
Mr. Hood was preceded in death by his son, Jimmie Carnell Hood, Jr., his father, Marvin Clyde Hood and his mother, Mary Ruth Hawkins Hood. His sister, Mary Clyde Hood Hazlewood died in 1961.
Jimmie is survived by his wife of 65 years Mary Agnes Lewis Hood, daughters Mary Virginia Hood Sally (Joey), and Jane Hyde Hood Shows. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joseph Hollister Gray Jr., Stephen James Gray (Pheng), and James Kyle Sanderford (Allison).
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, June 10, 2023 at New Cleveland Cemetery in Cleveland, Mississippi at 11:00 A.M. Rev. Seth Still will officiate the service.
