On August 11, 2024, Jimmie Lee Oglesby, aged 81, peacefully passed away at his residence in Wright's Crossing, MS, surrounded by his devoted family. Jimmie, born on July 20, 1943, to J.C. and Irene Davis Oglesby in Bolivar County, MS, spent his formative years in the Rosedale area, where he attended Rosedale Schools. On November 7, 1964, he married his beloved Sheila Ann Spencer in Rosedale, MS.
As the eldest of nine siblings, Jimmie showed remarkable responsibility by leaving school to care for his brothers and sisters. At 21, he earned his pilot's license and embarked on a nearly five-decade-long career as a tow boat captain and a brief stint as a truck driver. Jimmie was known for his strong work ethic and meticulous approach to daily tasks, often preparing to-do lists to ensure everything was accomplished. In addition to his profession, he had various passions, including caring for his horses, gardening, beekeeping, and raising animals such as quail, rabbits, turkeys, and chickens. A true cowboy at heart, his greatest calling was providing unwavering care to his family and serving God.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Irene Oglesby; his sisters Shirley Guillory and Brenda Hall; and a grandson, Adam West Savage. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sheila Ann Oglesby, of Wright's Crossing, MS; his daughters; Tasa L. Oglesby, Teresa A. Smith (Charles), Tracy L. Oglesby, all of Wrights Crossing, MS, Tanya S. Oglesby, of Vicksburg, MS, and son Jimmie Keith Oglesby (Suzanne) of Vicksburg, MS; and 14 grandchildren: Dylan Quattlebaum, Donnie LaPresto, Michael Savage, Keith Russell, Kole Stubbs, Steven Couey, China Couey Snyder, Taylor Couey Shores, Brian Frazier, Jax Carter Oglesby, Land Oglesby, Ace Oglesby, Brandon Oglesby, Colton Oglesby, Morgan Smith, and Justin Smith. He also leaves behind 19 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews to cherish his memory. Jimmie is additionally survived sisters Gladys Gilbeaux, Kathleen Davenport and brothers, Edward Oglesby, Joe Oglesby, Henry Oglesby, Billy Wayne Oglesby and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Moore, with whom he shared a special bond. His loyal fur baby, Weebee, who stayed by his side until the end. He cherished the lifelong friendships he made throughout his life. He had a talent and passion for playing the guitar and singing. He truly had many hidden talents.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 14, at Cleveland Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 15, in the Cleveland Funeral Home Chapel, followed by burial at Beulah Cemetery. The services will be officiated by Reverend Chris Gentry.
Jimmie will be laid to rest with the support of pallbearers Jax Carter Oglesby, Land Holden Oglesby, Jimmie Keith Oglesby, Michael Ryan Savage, Donnie Lee LaPresto, and Dylan Quattlebaum, with Edward Oglesby serving as the honorary pallbearer.
The family extends special thanks to the Adorations Hospice nurses for their exceptional care and support.
