Joe Alan Sherwood, age 63, of Cleveland, died on Tuesday August 17, 2010 at his home in Cleveland. He was born on July 09, 1947 to Lawson and Elizabeth Inez (Stacy) Sherwood in Cleveland, MS. Joe graduated Cleveland High School and enlisted in the US Navy where he fought in the Vietnam War where he obtained the rank of Seaman. Upon his return to Cleveland he graduated from at Delta State University with a B.S. in Speech. Joe had been a painting contractor for over 30 years. He was also a published author having written the book Reflections from the Delta. Joe was a member of the VFW Post 4800 where he had held the positions of All State Team Post Commander 1976-1977, District 15 Commander 1978-1979, Post Jr. Vice Commander 1992-1993 and Post Sr. Vice Commander 1993-1994, and Poet Laureate of the VFW, he was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge post 1532 in Cleveland and the Cleveland Little Theater. Joe also had an extensive music background having been a DJ at WCLD Radio and was also a member of the 21st Century Band. He was preceded in death by his father Lawson F Sherwood, Sr. and a brother Lawson F Sherwood, Jr. Visitation will be held Thursday August 19, 2010 from 10:00 AM until funeral service at 11:00 AM in the Cleveland Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Lehrton Cemetery in Ruleville, MS. The Reverend Tommy Stacy will officiate the service. He is survived by his Mother, Elizabeth Inez Stacy Sherwood of Cleveland, MS. Two daughters, Laura Goolsby of Pontotoc, MS and Samantha and husband Ramon Montemayor of Cleveland, MS. Brother, George Sherwood of Cleveland, MS. Sister, Dolores and husband Bill Steiger of Albuquerque, NM. Brother, Steve and wife June Sherwood of Cleveland, MS. Brother, Raymond and wife Tobey Sherwood of Cleveland, MS. 4 grandchildren, Sadie and Ally Montemayor of Cleveland, MS, and Sarah and Austin Goolsby of Pontotoc, MS. Joe also leaves a host of nieces and nephews and a special friend, Jessie Woodall of Cleveland, MS. Pall-bearers will be Ramon Montemayor, Brian Sherwood, Bill Steiger, Brandon Sherwood, Stewart Sherwood and Nathan Woodward. Cleveland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
