Martha W Beevers

February 23, 1937 — June 14, 2024

Cleveland

Martha Elaine Wilson Beevers, age 87, of Cleveland, Mississippi passed away peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2024, at the Bolivar Medical Center Long Term Care Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

Martha was born February 23, 1937, to Leo Curtis Wilson and Agnes Elaine Milam Wilson in Tupelo. She graduated from New Albany High School and was a proud “W” alumna, earning her BS degree in Home Economics at Mississippi State College for Women. After graduation, she worked as an Extension 4-H Youth Agent in Prentiss County. Martha married the love of her life, Kelly Miller Beevers, Jr. on December 29, 1960, in Booneville. She began married life as an Army wife at Fort Stewart, Georgia. After Kelly’s discharge, they made their home in Cleveland.

They took over the family farm, the third generation to work land that was cleared in the 1890’s by Kelly’s grandfather. She was a proud farmer’s wife and worked alongside Kelly in the operation. At one point, they even had “His and Hers” combines! After her children were in school, she began a career with the United States Post Office in Cleveland as a rural letter carrier. She eventually carried the mail in Doddsville and then Sunflower until her retirement.

She was a maker. She always said she liked to do things that were permanent, as opposed to things like housework! She was a talented seamstress, making clothes for herself and her daughters; from play clothes to wedding dresses. She was also a quilter for herself and others, and even made several split oak baskets. She was a gardener, a great cook and had a teacher’s heart. She taught her daughters to cook and sew and passed her love and knowledge of plants along to them.

She served as a Bolivar County 4-H Leader and was active in the local quilt guild and Rural Letter Carriers Association. But more importantly, Martha loved the Lord and her family with all her heart, serving faithfully in her church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sisters, Joan Agnew of Baldwyn, and Jane Strickland of Columbus.

Martha is survived by daughters Kristi Beevers Gill (Lee) of Smithdale, Kerri Beevers Mitchell of Cleveland; brothers-in-law Larry D. Cobb of Lenoir City, Tennessee, and Robert Agnew of Baldwyn; three Grandchildren, Wesley Thomas Gill (Ashley) of Smithdale, Leah Gill Smith (Corbin) of McComb, and Daniel Cade Gill (Chloe’) of Smithdale; six Great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Immanuel Baptist Church. The Celebration of Life Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 AM in the church sanctuary. Burial will be in the New Cleveland Cemetery. Dr. Steve Huber will officiate the services.

Pallbearers are Lee Gill, Wes Gill, Corbin Smith, Dan Gill, Frank Agnew, and Brad Shivers.
